ARCHAEOLOGY DEPARTMENT

Although it was among the departments established within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the foundation of the university in 1992, it began its activities in December 1997 under the name Department of Archaeology and Art History. On May 8, 2002, it was officially separated as the Department of Archaeology by the Interuniversity Council. In 2022, following the decision of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) to restructure Faculties of Arts and Sciences, the department continued its educational activities under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The department has four divisions: Prehistory, Protohistory and Near Eastern Archaeology, Classical Archaeology, and Medieval Archaeology. Undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD programs are offered. The language of instruction is Turkish. The duration of the undergraduate program is four years.

Aim of the Department / Program:

To train specialist archaeologists who will perform their profession at the highest level within official units of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and other ministries. The department aims to instill professional and scientific ethics in young scholars who are expected to achieve significant professional success in the future and to contribute effectively to the development of Turkish archaeology, particularly regional archaeology. It also seeks to become a department recognized nationally and internationally in the fields of excavation, research, and restoration through its graduates, preferred by foreign scholars as a place to work, and serving as a showcase for the university.
