Although it was among the departments opened within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences when the university was founded in 1992, it became the Department of Archaeology and Art History in December 1997. It was separated as the Department of Archaeology by the Council of Higher Education on May 8., 2002, and its first students began to admitted in the 2002-2003 academic year. Following the separation of the Faculties of Arts and Sciences by the decision of the Council of Higher Education in 2022, the Faculty continues its educational activities within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The department consists of four main branches of science: Prehistory, Protohistory and Near Eastern Archaeology, Classical Archaeology and Medieval Archaeology. Currently, students are being accepted to train specialists in the Archaeology Master's and Archaeology Doctorate Programs affiliated with the Institute of Archaeology. The language of instruction is Turkish and the duration of education is 4 years.
