Necropolis
The Necropolis of Sillyon is spread over the southwest, northwest and northern slopes of the city. The tombs were oriented preferably east-west, northeast-southwest, north-south directions, and sometimes the tomb direction was dictated by the topography. The Necropolis area was completely shaped according to the topography and the geological structure of the city. Every rock outcrop, especially in the northwest, seems to have been used as a burial site. Some of the tombs were arranged in complexes and narrow alleys were created for access between the tombs. In the Necropolis, tomb types such as chamosorion, pillar tomb, sarcophagus and rock tombs are dominant. Chamosorion-type tombs are quite common and those above the ground have been robbed and their lids were overturned. Therefore, it is difficult to have a clear idea about the interior arrangement of the chamosoria and how they were covered.
Chamosorion tombs are found on the bedrock, sometimes individually and sometimes as clusters. These should be family burials. In the southwest of the Necropolis, there are single, rarely double or triple chamosoria hewn into the bedrock and can be accessed via steps; in the northwest, most tombs were carved into the bedrock as multiple burial sites. There are also examples of round, square and rectangular rock-cut pots for offerings and tombs that can be climbed by stairs. High-platform tombs cut into the bedrock, accessed by stairs, usually offer views of Perge and sunset. As a result of the studies, it is understood that the Necropolis areas in Sillyon were used starting in the Classical period through the Turkish-Islamic period.
