EXACAVATION OF SILLYON IN THE 2020 SEASON

The excavations of the ancient city of Sillyon located in Yanköy neighborhood of Serik district in Antalya province have been deemed appropriate to be carried out under the scientific coordination of Dr. Murat TAŞKIRAN and the direction of Antalya Museum Directorate in 2020, by the letter numbered E.418316 and dated 18.06.2020, from the General Directorate of Cultural Assets and Museums of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey. In this context, the 2020 Sillyon Excavation Works were carried out between 09.07.2020-18.09.2020.

The first place where the excavation works were started this year in Sillyon was the Castle Mosque. Various studies have been carried out in the city and its surroundings parallel to the excavation works. One of the focal points of these studies was the water system of the city. The water structures in Sillyon (Roman Bath, Nymphaeum A, Aqueduct, cisterns, etc.) were documented in detail and researched, and their drawings were prepared for publication. Geophysical studies were carried out during different periods of excavation to determine the base water level in Sillyon. Geological studies initiated during the 2018 surface research to determine the unique geological structure of the city in all its details have continued. The catalogs of coins and other small findings collected from the local people and delivered to the Antalya Museum have been completed. Weed cleaning and necessary spraying have been carried out in the lower sections of the city (Stadium and Bath surroundings). The road/passage from Kocagözler neighborhood to the Roman Bath through the Stadium, which was previously used by villagers, has been cleaned, and it has been ensured that a terrain vehicle or tractor can enter these areas during excavation works.
