Residential Quarter

Residential areas in Sillyon are located in the northern part of the Acropolis. As yet, no examples of civil architecture have been attested in the Lower City. It is understood that the northern part of the Acropolis was reserved as a residential area in parallel with the urbanisation of Sillyon. This area is the highest point of the Acropolis and covers the northern part of the city which can clearly see up to the Taurus Mountains. Houses, usually carved from rocks, consist of a few rooms and all of these houses open to the streets that connect to the Main Street. It is also seen that some have a courtyard. The house plans here do not show a certain layout and were designed quite simply for the needs. It is understood from the traces in the area that the upper parts of the rock-cut walls were completed with polygonal masonry or wooden construction. Cisterns were placed right in front of each house or in the streets, enough to supply for the houses. These cisterns have a depth of 3 m at some places and 4.5 m at others. It is seen that the cisterns were covered with a lid stone and a hole was cut out to facilitate drawing the water. The rock-cut troughs in the streets between houses are noteworthy. These troughs reached the cisterns and ensured that rainwater was easily stored in them. The facts that the area has been used for a long time, that they were cut from the bedrock, that slips and deep crevices developing due to landslides make it difficult to pinpoint the area precisely.
