Content of the Department

The programs offered by our department are taught in English. Students who are enrolled in our department need to pass the English language proficiency exam in order to take first-year courses. If a student fails the proficiency exam, they are required to complete the English language proficiency program provided by the School of Foreign Languages

In the first year of the undergraduate program, students learn about literary terms and concepts and focus on various literary texts that form the basis of English literature. They will also get an overview of English culture and literature.

In the second, third, and fourth years of the program, students will explore the developmental adventure of English literature throughout different chronological periods. This will help them understand the cultural and historical characteristics of the selected canonical literary texts that are considered fundamental in each period. They are also encouraged to take composition courses and the optional research project (BA thesis) to enhance their academic writing and research skills.

The department aims to help students achieve an advanced level of English language competency and learn the historical development of literary genres such as poetry, theatre, novel, and short story from the first examples to the present day. They learn to criticize, examine, and reinterpret different examples of these genres from their own point of view using various essential and contemporary literary theory and criticism.

In addition, students are required to study a second foreign language (French/German/Japanese) and can take non-departmental elective courses to meet their academic interests and self-improvement. The department constantly updates its curriculum by adapting to ever-changing social and cultural conditions and reviewing and revising its goals. For this reason, national and international developments in the field of literature and culture, as well as the developments in the interdisciplinary studies in humanities, are constantly followed, and the existing goals are reviewed and updated after the necessary synthesis.

Our department offers a two-way education program to our students through double major and minor programs. Students can receive a double major in various fields such as Archeology, Philosophy, French Language and Literature, Art History, Sociology, History, Economics, Business Administration, Political Science and Public Administration, International Trade and Finance, Gastronomy and Culinary Arts, Tourism Management and Tourism Guidance; and a minor in the same fields if the necessary conditions are met.

Internship practice is not compulsory for our students, but our undergraduate and postgraduate students can do internships abroad through the Erasmus+ Internship program by making individual agreements with many universities, companies, or institutions abroad and obtaining the necessary approval from the department. Besides, our students can gain international education experience and learn about new cultures at bilateral agreement universities abroad through the Erasmus+ and Mevlana Programs, which are two well-known comprehensive student exchange and cultural mobility programs.

Our department established the university student community, B.E.S.T, to offer a field of application for the theoretical knowledge our students learn through courses. B.E.S.T organizes theatre plays, poetry recitals, and various art workshops every year. For the same purpose, our department also organizes an undergraduate student conference called PACES every year.

Our department hosts international conferences (BAKEA, IDEA) to enable our students to be aware of and follow up-to-date academic approaches and studies. The essential aim is to bring our students together with local and foreign academicians who carry out interdisciplinary studies in many fields of social sciences. The first BAKEA (International Western Culture and Literatures Studies) Symposium was organized by our department in 2009 and has been organized by different universities every two years. The 8th BAKEA Symposium was organized and offered online to academics worldwide by Marmara University in 2023. The 9th BAKEA Symposium will be organized by Selçuk University in 2025.

Finally, we organize events under the name of PAU-DELL TALKS every year and invite academicians from different universities to present their studies in various fields to our students through online or face-to-face interviews.
