PACES 2025: 9TH PAMUKKALE CONFERENCE OF ENGLISH STUDIES

On May 5, 2025, the Department of English Language and Literature at Pamukkale University proudly hosted the 9th annual PACES Undergraduate Conference, dedicated this year to the theme of “Woman.” The event brought together undergraduate students, academics, and invited guests for a day of rich academic discussion and cultural engagement. The conference welcomed 41 participants from 14 different universities.

The conference’s keynote speaker, Prof. Dr. Gillian Alban from Istanbul Kültür University, delivered a compelling talk titled “Women Wielding their Medusa Gaze in Literature.” In her presentation, Prof. Alban explored how the mythological figure of Medusa has been reinterpreted in literature as a symbol of female empowerment, examining the reclaiming of the “female gaze” as an act of resistance and authorship.

The papers presented at the conference were published in a special issue of HALO, the journal of the Department of English Language and Literature at Pamukkale University, thereby making a lasting academic contribution.

Additionally, supported by TÜBİTAK, this conference stood out as a significant event aimed at encouraging academic production at the undergraduate level.

In addition to scholarly presentations by undergraduate students, the conference offered a unique cultural dimension. A field trip to the ancient city of Kibyra was organized, where participants had the opportunity to view the renowned Medusa mosaic in situ. This visit enriched the academic theme of the conference by grounding it in local cultural heritage and mythology.

Now in its ninth year, PACES continues to serve as an important platform for encouraging undergraduate research and dialogue in the fields of literature, gender studies, and cultural analysis. The 2025 edition stood out for its critical engagement with the roles, representations, and voices of women across time and texts.

The Department of English Language and Literature extends its thanks to all participants, speakers, and students who contributed to making the event a success.
