Welcome to our department, where the medium of instruction is entirely in English. Our dynamic program is designed to guide students from foundational literary concepts to advanced critical analysis, fostering both academic excellence and global awareness.
Upon enrollment, students take an English proficiency exam administered by the School of Foreign Languages. Those who pass immediately begin their first-year undergraduate coursework, while those who require additional support complete a comprehensive English preparatory program.
We continuously update our curriculum to adapt to shifting social and cultural landscapes. By closely following domestic and international developments—as well as interdisciplinary trends—we ensure our students receive a modern and relevant education.
-
First Year: Students are introduced to fundamental literary concepts alongside a broad overview of British culture and literature, analysing key foundational texts.
-
Second to Fourth Years: The curriculum takes a chronological journey through the development of British literature. Students examine canonical texts within their historical and cultural contexts, exploring the evolution of poetry, drama, novels, and short stories.
-
Academic Skills: Dedicated courses in academic writing, composition, and thesis preparation ensure our students graduate with strong research and writing capabilities.
-
Critical Thinking: Through the lens of contemporary literary theory and criticism, students learn to analyse, critique, and reinterpret a wide variety of texts.
-
Broadening Horizons: To further their personal and professional development, students can choose a second foreign language (French, German, or Japanese) alongside various departmental and non-departmental electives.
We encourage our students to pursue a multidisciplinary education. Eligible students have the opportunity to expand their expertise by undertaking a Double Major (earning a second degree) or a Minor program in a wide range of departments.
While we do not have a mandatory internship requirement, we strongly support students who wish to gain professional experience.
-
Erasmus+ Internships: Undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students can secure approvals from international universities, companies, or institutions to complete voluntary internships abroad.
-
Student Exchange: Through the Erasmus and Mevlana exchange programs, our students can study at partner universities worldwide, experiencing new cultures and broadening their international perspectives.
We believe that theoretical knowledge must be paired with practical application and community engagement.
-
B.E.S.T. (Western Literatures and Art Club): Founded by our department, this active student club brings literature to life by organising annual theatre performances, poetry readings, and various art workshops.
-
PACES Conference: To foster academic sharing among undergraduates, we host the annual Pamukkale Conference of English Studies for Undergraduate Students (PACES).
-
BAKEA Symposium: Our department proudly initiated the International Western Culture and Literature Studies Symposium (BAKEA) in 2009. After being hosted by various universities, it returned home to us for its 7th iteration as an online event in 2021. The 9th BAKEA Symposium will be hosted by Konya Selçuk University in 2025.
