Conference on "Digitalization, Social Media Addiction and Family Structure" Held at Faculty

Updated Date: 01 December 2025

The Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Pamukkale University organized a conference examining the effects of digitalization on individuals and families as part of "2025 Year of the Family" activities.

Prof. Kâmil ORHAN from the Department of Labor Economics and Industrial Relations delivered the conference, comprehensively evaluating the reflections of digital transformation on identity, belonging, behavioral patterns, and family relationships.

The conference emphasized that social media transforms the ways individuals express themselves. It was noted that digital identities create new roles and expectations that may conflict with real identities. The presentation highlighted attention deficit, digital fatigue, emotional exhaustion, and anxiety about maintaining online image brought by constant online presence.

Prof. ORHAN stated that social media addiction is becoming an increasingly visible problem with dimensions such as salience, mood regulation, tolerance, withdrawal, and relapse. He noted that individual screen time is gradually replacing traditional family interactions, transforming family life into a state of being "alone together," which can result in social isolation and emotional distance.

Emphasizing the growing importance of "digital parenting" and "digital family" concepts, Prof. ORHAN stated that families can create significant advantages in long-distance relationships, educational processes, and joint planning when they use technology correctly as a communication tool. He noted that while the digital world offers opportunities, it also carries risks, stressing the need to maintain a balance between means and ends.

The conference concluded with participants' questions being answered and contributions related to the topic being shared.
