The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences was established on July 25, 2022, by Presidential Decree No. 5868. Since then, the departments of Archaeology, Geography, Contemporary Turkish Dialects and Literature, Philosophy, French Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, Cultural Heritage Conservation and Restoration, Psychology, Art History, Sociology, History, and Turkish Language and Literature, which were previously part of the Faculty of Science and Letters (founded under Law No. 3837 on July 3, 1992), became part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Among these departments, History and Turkish Language and Literature were the first to start admitting students, beginning in the 1994–1995 academic year, shortly after the establishment of the Faculty of Science and Letters. Philosophy began offering undergraduate education in the 1999–2000 academic year, Sociology and English Language and Literature in 2000–2001, Archaeology in 2002–2003, and Art History in 2003–2004. The French Language and Literature program started admitting students in the 2009–2010 academic year. In the 2014–2015 academic year, the Geography and Contemporary Turkish Dialects and Literature departments began admitting students, followed by the Cultural Heritage Conservation and Restoration Department in 2019–2020, and finally, the Psychology Department in the 2021–2022 academic year. With the inclusion of these programs, the number of departments offering undergraduate education in the faculty reached 12. Additionally, five departments (English Language and Literature, Art History, Sociology, History, and Turkish Language and Literature) continue to admit students to their Evening Education Programs.
The faculty’s main buildings, currently used for education and research purposes, were developed over the years. The first building, Block B, was completed in the 1999–2000 academic year and originally served as part of the Faculty of Science and Letters. This block includes educational facilities and administrative offices. Block A was opened in 2004, Block C in 2006, and Block D in 2008, progressively expanding the faculty's capacity.
