Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. It's caused by long-term exposure to irritating gases or particulate matter. COPD is treatable. with proper management, most people with COPD can achieve good symptom control and quality of life, as well as reduced risk of other associated conditions. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are the two most common conditions that contribute to COPD. The main cause of COPD in developed countries is tobacco smoking, however, genetics, occupational and environmental factors are responsible for 10 % of the facts.
Asst. Prof. Erhan Uğurlu tells that operation takes place as anesthetized in the operating room. Emphysema is a condition in which the alveoli at the end of the smallest air passages (bronchioles) of the lungs are destroyed irreversibly. This lung disease causes destruction of the fragile walls and elastic fibers of the alveoli. Small airways collapse when you exhale, impairing airflow out of your lungs. For this reason, traditional treatment is limited with breath expanders and anti-inflammatories.
Lung Volume Reduction Coil Treatment: PneumRX (PneumRx, Inc. Mountain View CA, USA) lung volume reduction wires are made of nitinol and they are placed as to make compression on parenchyma after after they are open. These wires are placed bronchoscopicly with using a carrier system suitable for themselves. First of all, chosen airway is defined bronchoscopicly and low-resistive pioneer wire is pushed forward with fluoroscopy through the airway. A catheter is crossed over the pioneer wire and airway is measured with radio opaque markers. When the catheter is pulled away, it is ensured to pull back parenchyma attached to the airway with the help of spring-shaped wire. It is possible to take out or put the coil again with reverse order of implantation process. Operation takes place under general anesthesia and in the operating room.
‘’Bronchoscopic volume decreasing spiral treatment is a new method in emphysema treatment. Patient’s anatomical, physiological properties and careful selection of patients play a critical role. Patients’ symptoms are reduced 25 % with this method. ‘’ says Asst. Prof. Uğurlu.
Patients who receive a diagnosis of COPD should apply to Pamukkale University Department of Chest Diseases in terms of convenience of the treatment.
