The Department of Contemporary Turkish Dialects and Literatures at Pamukkale University was established in 2013 and consists of five divisions: the Department of South-Western (Oghuz) Turkish Dialects and Literatures; the Department of South-Eastern (Turkestan-Uighur) Turkish Dialects and Literatures; the Department of North-Western (Tatar-Bashkir-Kazakh-Kyrgyz) Turkish Dialects; the Department of North-Eastern (Altay-Tuvan-Khakas-Sakha) Turkish Dialects and Literatures; and the Department of Chuvash Turkish Dialects and Literatures.
The Department of Contemporary Turkish Dialects and Literatures commenced its educational activities in the 2014–2015 academic year by admitting students to its regular undergraduate program. Located on the ground floor (B Block Entrance Level) of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Pamukkale University’s Kınıklı Campus, the department offers a four-year undergraduate program with Turkish as the language of instruction. The annual student quota for the regular program is 80 students. Admission is based on the TS-2 score type of the national university entrance examination (LYS).
Currently, the department employs three Professors, one Associate Professor, three Assistant Professors (Dr.), one foreign national Lecturer holding a Ph.D., and one Research Assistant holding a Ph.D.
Closely following academic developments both in Türkiye and worldwide, our department has been structured with a dynamic and realistic perspective capable of responding to the evolving scientific needs of the modern era. With its commitment to quality, reliability, and academic excellence, it aims to become one of the leading and influential centers in the field of Turkology. The department seeks to introduce innovative ideas, original approaches, and interdisciplinary perspectives that shape the Turkological academic community. It embraces a vision that not only transmits existing knowledge but also produces and guides new knowledge. By scientifically studying the historical depth of the Turkish language and all its living dialects and varieties, the department aims to serve as a research center that preserves, develops, and carries this heritage into the future. In line with this goal, it provides a strong academic foundation for researchers, graduate students, and scholars interested in the field. In the long term, it aspires to become a reference center in Turkology, shaping the direction of the discipline through its scholarly output.
Vision and Mission
The Department of Contemporary Turkish Dialects and Literatures aims to raise young people who know and embrace the values of Turkish culture, who can establish relations with other Turkish republics, who can freely express their thoughts, who can think critically, and who prioritize scientificness and realism.
By studying in our department, our students will have the opportunity to:
Analyze contemporary Turkish from a modern linguistic perspective,
Use at least one dialect reading, writing, speaking and listening skills to a good degree,
Transfer oral and written texts between dialects,
Protect the historical and cultural heritage in the field of Contemporary Turkish Dialects and Literatures,
Transfer historical Turkish dialects to Turkish by having the infrastructure,
Follow inter-dialect literature and gain the ability to make academic publications,
Look at literary texts with an interdisciplinary approach,
Learn Russian and use it in basic skills,
Travel to the entire geography of the Turkish world, especially the Turkish republics, through signed protocols and various exchange programs.
Postgraduate Opportunities
Our graduates who want to continue their academic life with postgraduate programs, if they are successful in the exams to be opened, are entitled to become postgraduate students in the Contemporary Turkish Dialects and Literatures departments of universities.
Job Opportunities
Our students who graduate from the Contemporary Turkish Dialects and Literatures Department with a "Bachelor's Degree" and the title of "Turkologist", can be civil servants as "experts" in institutions related to the field such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, TIKA, TÜRKSOY, Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities, Turkish Embassies, Atatürk Language and History High Institution.
They can hold various positions in TRT and the Ministry of Culture.
Those who complete their formation training can work as teachers.
They can conduct studies related to the field as academics.
They can work as field experts in the private sector doing business with the Turkish World.
They can work as translators.
Since they have the ability to read old written texts, they can work in libraries, archives and museums.
