History of The Department

The foundations of the Faculty of Education at Pamukkale University date back to the Denizli Girls’ Teacher Training School, established in 1957. This institution was renamed the Denizli Education Institute in 1976 and later the Denizli Higher School of Education in 1982, when it was affiliated with the Buca Faculty of Education at Dokuz Eylül University. Following the establishment of Pamukkale University under Law No. 3837 dated July 3, 1992, it was restructured as the Faculty of Education of Pamukkale University on November 10, 1992. In 1994, the Department of Art Education (Painting–Craft Teaching) was established within the Faculty of Education. The first studios were located in temporary structures near the Technical Sciences Vocational School building, known as the “airplane school,” while theoretical courses were held in the former Girls’ Teacher Training School building. In 1998, within the scope of the Higher Education Council’s National Education Development Project (YÖK-MEGP), the department was restructured and renamed as the Division of Art Education (Painting–Craft Education) under the Department of Fine Arts Education. With this restructuring, the division acquired its current institutional identity. Over time, the studios were relocated several times: first to the İncilipınar KYK Dormitory building in the early 2000s, then to the Faculty of Education building at Kınıklı Campus in 2008, and finally to the current C Block building in 2020. Today, C Block houses all studio and classroom facilities. Graduate education began in the mid-1990s under the Institute of Social Sciences and has been continued under the Institute of Educational Sciences, established in 2011. In 2023, a doctoral program was launched, admitting its first students in the Fall semester of the 2024–2025 academic year. With a history spanning over thirty years, the Division of Art Education has made significant contributions to the academic and cultural life of Denizli. With its strong academic staff, contemporary educational approach, and active engagement in artistic production, it stands out among similar programs in Türkiye.
