CITY AND REGIONAL PLANNER

A City Planner is a professional who has completed a four-year undergraduate program in City and Regional Planning and has acquired the authorization to practice the profession by registering with the UCTEA (Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects) Chamber of City Planners. In a broader context, they are individuals who play a decisive role in ecological, spatial, socio-cultural, economic, institutional, and administrative decision-making processes within the framework of planning, design, and implementation studies for urban and rural settlements. Furthermore, they possess the capacity to provide alternative proposals and solutions to contemporary issues and challenges.

THE PROFESSION OF CITY AND REGIONAL PLANNING

City and Regional Planning is an applied science and professional discipline that defines the thematic scope, content, and methodological processes of research (analysis-synthesis), planning, design, and implementation. These processes are directed toward shaping the spatial characteristics and functional identities of human settlements within the production-consumption-waste cycle, fundamentally grounded in the principle of sustainability.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Individuals aspiring to work in the field of City and Regional Planning must possess the following attributes: They should be cognizant of the significance and necessity of the sustainable preservation of natural, cultural, and historical heritage. Furthermore, they must value visual and aesthetic qualities, demonstrate an aptitude for multidisciplinary collaboration and dialogue, and be predisposed to teamwork. Essential competencies include quantitative and sociological reasoning, proficiency in information technologies, and a conscientious, investigative approach to contemporary societal issues. Moreover, they should exhibit strong verbal, written, and graphical communication skills, and maintain receptiveness to novel perspectives, diverse ideas, and constructive criticism.

AWARDED TITLE

Upon successful completion of the educational program, graduates are awarded a Bachelor's Degree and earn the professional title of "City Planner."

SCOPE OF WORK AND EMPLOYMENT FIELDS

  The professional scope of City and Regional Planning encompasses all typologies and scales of development-oriented planning, design, and reporting operations aimed at defining the spatial and functional identities of urban and rural settlements. This involves a broad spectrum of interventions, ranging from land use allocations and transportation-communication networks to population density distribution and sectoral development strategies. It further includes heritage conservation and urban renewal, the provision of socio-cultural and technical infrastructure, building typologies, and zoning regulations.

Owing to the interdisciplinary nature of the City and Regional Planning discipline, graduates benefit from diverse employment opportunities across both public and private sectors.

City Planners can be employed in the central and provincial organizations of various governmental bodies, including the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization; the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications; the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock; the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs; the Ministry of Culture and Tourism; the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources; and the Ministry of Development. Furthermore, they can serve in the relevant departments of local governments such as Governorships, Metropolitan and Provincial/District Municipalities; within Universities and Research & Development Centers; in City and Regional Planning, Architecture, and Urban Design firms; in investment companies within the construction sector; and in financial and construction firms operating within the real estate valuation and development sector.
