📚History of the Department

Department of Social Studies Education, Faculty of Education, Pamukkale University

The Department of Social Studies Education, under the Faculty of Education at Pamukkale University, began admitting students in the 1998–1999 academic year. The department aims to train social studies teachers and offers a rich and multidisciplinary curriculum that covers fields such as history, geography, civics, sociology, and anthropology.

Between the 1998–1999 and 2011–2012 academic years, both daytime and evening education programs were offered, with approximately 140 students admitted annually during this period. Since the 2011–2012 academic year, only the daytime (regular) education program has been maintained, and as of the 2016–2017 academic year, the student intake has been limited to 60 students per year.

As of the 2023–2024 academic year, the department has the following academic staff:

• 5 Professors

• 4 Associate Professors

• 2 Assistant Professors (Ph.D.)

• 1 Lecturer (Ph.D.)

• 1 Research Assistant (Ph.D.)

Educational activities in the department are carried out by a dynamic, participatory, and field-expert academic staff, aiming to train individuals who possess both theoretical knowledge and practical teaching skills.

The department offers the following programs:

• Undergraduate (Bachelor's)

• Non-thesis Master's

• Thesis-based Master's

The language of instruction is Turkish. The programs are based on contemporary pedagogical approaches and active learning methods, providing students with a democratic and critically engaging learning environment.

With its strong academic staff, modern educational philosophy, and continuously evolving programs, the Department of Social Studies Education at Pamukkale University holds a significant place in the field of social studies teacher education in Turkey. Its graduates play an active role in the education system by undertaking the mission of fostering historical and social consciousness.
