WEST PORTICO OF THE ARCHED BUILDING

Four columns originally standing on the stylobate wall bordering the portico on its west were uncovered in Alley 2 as they had fallen there together with their drums and capitals. The columnar elements were taken to the stone field for classification purposes. In parallel to the cleaning and restoration of the columnar elements in the stone field the deteriorated parts of the stylobate wall and the east wall of the portico (Fig. 1) were completed using creek stones and travertine materials as per original and mortar lines were renewed (Fig. 2).

Pieces taken to the stone field were balanced with probation and fitted on their undersides with steel-chrome dowels sticking out about 13 cm (Fig. 3). Holes were drilled on the top sides for fitting the dowels of the upper piece to be placed (Fig. 4). For the dowels fitted on the undersides of column bases, holes were drilled on the stylobate. Thereafter, liquid araldite was poured in the dowel holes and pieces were put up in their original spots, thus completing the restoration (Fig. 5).
