ROOM B AND ROOM C

Surviving frescoes on the taberna walls were first documented by photography; then fine hair pencils were used for dry cleaning of plaster and fresco surfaces and unpressurised water used for overall cleaning in order to determine their outlines and plan for future interventions (Fig. 1).

After the layers and contours were determined fine cleaning started with removing the dirt and earth between the layers; the lacunae between the layers were filled with injection mortar through holes of 2-3 mm opened and a border was made. The border is at a lower level than the original plaster and a hidden border was made at the upper level. An aesthetic border was made along the upper contours to improve the holding between the plasters and wall and to accentuate the frescoes’ appearance (Fig. 2).

Following the conservation of the frescoes, earth filling in the mortar lines of the walls were cleaned and lime mortar was applied (Fig. 3). The bench in Room B was also rebuilt and mortar lines were completed (Fig. 4).
