ALLEY 2

Excavations initiated at the Alley 2 (ARS2) extended northward from the east-west Colonnaded Streetof the Roman period and it was narrowed somewhat when Early Byzantine Church 4 and its atrium were built in the Early Byzantine period (Fig. 1).

A segment of 22.90 m in length was excavated; on the east is a portico with a stylobate height of 1.21 m and on the stylobate is a row of columns reaching 4.21 m height once carrying the roof of the western portico of the Arched Building. The western part of the alley has not been excavated yet (Fig. 2).

The street is paved with large size travertine blocks (Fig. 3). This pavement bears troughs starting from the South City Gate 1 (Fig. 4) and extending north and these had beenformed by the wooden wheels of horse carriages (Fig. 5).

The entrance area to the Early Byzantine Church 4 (EBK4) is paved with bricks, travertines and opus sectile and it was built on top of the travertine block pavement of the street.

The access to the Arched Building of the visitors arriving at the site is facilitated by a timber stairway installed from the Alley 2 across the west portico of the Arched Building (Fig. 6).
