ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING PROGRAM

 

General Information about English Language Teaching Division

 

            Foreign Languages Teaching Department started to give undergraduate level education in the academic year of 2006-2007.  In the unit, the medium of instruction is English. One year of preparatory class is required for those who cannot get a passing grade in the exemption examination held at the beginning of each academic year. The students who pass the English proficiency test are exempted from the preparatory class and start the freshman classes.

 

            The aim of the English Language Teaching Division is to train teachers of English who have good command of contemporary language teaching methods and techniques, and who can use them effectively in primary, secondary and university contexts. To meet these needs, the students are expected to

a)       develop their linguistic competence

b)       increase their awareness of language-culture relations

c)       to master the qualities and principles of teaching profession

d)       develop the necessary skills to teach English with the help of contemporary methods and techniques.

 

Additionally, another aim of the department is to train students who will study at the master’s degree, and eventually pursue PhD degrees in the field.

 

Moreover, Foreign Languages Teaching Department encourages the students to think scientifically; to solve problems on their own or collaboratively with their friends; to be individuals who will never stop learning throughout their lives; to gain new interests and skills, and to be promoted to higher positions.

 

 

The number of Students and Class Population

 

            In 2013-2014 academic year,  English Language Teaching Unit has 419 students in total. 

 

The Admission Criteria

 

Turkish Students:

Undergraduate Level:  According to HEC (YOK) regulations, It is a requirement that candidates be high school graduates and pass the University Entrance Exam. The students are placed according to the Foreign Language Exam (YDS) scores.
